I feel blessed today! :) Thank God for giving me an MP3 player through my sis. Thank God for the Christmas 'angpow' too (I declined though). Incidentally, my family has the 'tradition' of giving angpows not just during Chinese New Year, but also during birthdays and Christmas.

By the way, 'angpow' is a red packet that contains money. Giving 'angpow' is a way of blessing the receiver during Chinese New Year. It is usually given by people who are older.

The picture on the right shows an 'angpow' and a green packet. Green packets are used by Muslims here in Singapore during Hari Raya. I suppose Muslims in other countries also use green packets.

Land of Dreams

Over the last few days, I wrote 2 Chinese pop songs. The music for 1 of them is done. The other one requires some fine-tuning to the lyrics first. This 2nd song is entitled 'Zhi Meng Yuan',  which means 'Land of Dreams' in English. It's a song about dreams. It's about what I envision my dreamland will look like.

Just in case some of you think I only write Chinese songs, I must add that I write English songs too. Comparatively, though, I think I have written more Chinese songs (both secular pop and Christian songs) than English ones.

Count your age by friends, not years.

New Beginnings

I'd finally completed verse 2 of a song that I wrote sometime this year, which is entitled "Xin De Qi Dian". It's a song about new beginnings.

We'll all probably have new beginnings at some point in our lives. For some of us, we may feel that we've messed it big time and so we yearn for a new beginning. For some of us, on the other hand, we may feel that we have suffered too much and so we yearn for a fresh start.

It's my prayer that this song will inspire hope when everything seems so bleak.

Letting Go of Friendships (Relationships)

I understand that it can be hard to let go of friendships (or for that matter, any relationships) that we have built over the years. However, if these friendships (or relationships) are emotionally draining to us or are unhealthy in other ways, then I believe we must make the wise choice of letting them go or setting a healthy boundary for the sake of our sanity and well-being.

Thought produces an actual physical change in the construction of the tissue. Therefore it's only necessary to have a certain number of thoughts on a given subject to bring about a complete change in the body's physical organization. This is how FAILURE is CHANGED TO SUCCESS.
~~ Charles F. Haanel (Author of The Master Key System)

Our thoughts play a critical part in determining the events in our lives. I am not saying that God is not in control of the events that happen in our lives. But I am personally convinced that our thoughts do play a part. Hence, it's very important for us to watch what we allow our minds to dwell on.

New Year Resolutions

I am looking forward to 2010, because I know the new year is going to be a brand new year with brand new beginnings for me. It will be a year of new directions for me, where ministry and career are concerned. It will also be a year in which I will be resuming my MDiv.

I am looking forward to becoming my own boss. Hopefully, I can be a boss of both a social enterprise as well as a publishing firm. It's my prayer that they will manifest God's glory and make a huge impact in the world for His glory.

Children have a special place in my heart. Thus, I am looking forward to serving in the children's ministry in my church in 2010. Some of these children have parents who are serving time in prison, while others are from low-income families. Hence, serving these children is especially meaningful to me.

I have a great love for learning. So naturally I look forward to resuming my MDiv, which is basically a theology degree, in 2010. I also have plans to take up a Post-Grad Diploma in TESOL as well as MBA. In addition, I also plan to learn guzhen, which is a Chinese musical instrument. I know it will take time to realise all my academic dreams. Nevertheless, with God's help, I believe that I should be able to complete them within several years.

The Beauty of Singlish

Singlish is the Singaporean version of the English Language. Personally, I think it has a certain beauty to it. Its beauty lies in its friendly tone. By adding words such as 'lor' and 'leh' at the end of some sentences make conversations sound more friendly. Even if other Singaporeans do not agree, at least that's how I feel about Singlish. Thus, I am all for the use of Singlish as a conversational language.

If we want to be truly happy and to live a fulfilling life, we must be willing to pursue our own dreams instead of the dreams of someone else or the dreams that someone else has for us.

My dad used to instill in me, as a child, his dream for me to become a doctor. But the problem is I am just not wired the way that doctors are. Doctors generally function more using their left brains whereas I am more of a 'right-brain' person. Moreover, I should be pursuing my own dreams rather than some kind of unfulfilled dreams that my dad might have held dear in his heart as a young man. I am not trying to be disrespectful towards my dad by saying this. But rather I am trying to bring up the importance of following our own dreams.

It's meaningless for us to pursue a dream that is not the 'right fit' for ourselves, isn't it?

True Success

I wonder how many of us will define our own successes through the lenses of people who are successful or anyone else? Have we ever wondered that someone else's success isn't necessarily the 'right fit' for ourselves?

To me, 'success' is a subjective term. A person's success is not necessarily another person's success. I may define 'success' by how much weath I have accumulated. However, someone else may define 'success' as having made this world a better place through his contributions. Yet another person may define it as having pursued a particular cause with dogged determination.

We must understand that we are all special in our own ways and we are gifted in different ways. As long as we have tapped into our full potential and have used our gifts/talents fully, we can be considered as successful.

The Refining Process

Yesterday, I heard a speaker talk about the polishing process of a diamond. He told the audience something to the effect that a diamond will only become beautiful after it's being polished. Likewise, a person's character will 'look good' only after it's being refined.

The refining of one's character can be a painful process. However, this refining process is necessary in order that his life will become like a beautiful diamond that naturally draws people to him.

The Power of Our Words

In the beginning, God simply spoke the word and the entire world came into being. And since we have been created in the likeness of God, our words likewise have creative power. Thus, our words have the power to build up and to tear down. Hence, it is extremely important for us to watch what we say to ourselves and to others, especially to children.

If we hope to see our dreams materialised, then we must be very careful with what we say to ourselves pertaining to these dreams that we hold dear in our hearts.

What will I feel worst about? I have yet to have a concrete answer. Just as a pregnant woman may likely experience some kind of discomfort during her pregnancy, we will probably experience some kind of discomfort before our dreams can be realised. Hence, it may be wise to just let go for when we choose to let go, it may somehow find its way back to us. Heart Knowledge vs Head Knowledge

Is head knowledge more important than heart knowledge? Where our knowledge of God is concerned, I believe it's more important to have a heart knowledge of God.

There are scholars (yes, scholars) who have an in-depth knowledge of the Bible but who are not Christians. If head knowledge is more important, then why aren't these scholars Christians?

What do I mean by 'heart knowledge'? Basically, heart knowledge of God is gained through our experiences of Him (His faithfulness, His love, etc). Without that, we can be Christians for many years but not having a REAL and STRONG relationship with Him. If Christians are to impact the world for Him and for the good of mankind, then genuine heart knowledge of Him is foundational and fundamental.

This is a Good One

Tell me how a young man uses his little ragged edges of time after his day's work is done, during his long winter evenings - what he is revolving in his mind at every opportunity - I will tell you what that young man's future will be.
~~ Orison Swett Marden

How true it is! What we think - what we allow our minds to think - is so critical that it actually can determine what our future will be like to quite a large extent. If we consistently allow garbage to fill our minds, our future will probably be one that is filled with 'garbage'. On the contrary, if we consistently fill our minds with thoughts of love, positive thoughts, happy thoughts, thoughts of hope, etc, we can be 100% sure that our future will be a great one in time to come! :)

In the fast-paced modern society in which we live, we would probably think to have solitude is a luxury that we cannot afford. I wonder how many of us actually recognise the value of solitude - value to our health, our mental/emotional well-being and value in terms of living a life of fulfillment?

Some sounds were being played during the workshop...sounds that have been transcribed from human beings (one is an AIDS patient), swan, dolphin, stars, Jupiter and Saturn. Wow...it's unbelievable that a mouse's DNA makeup, when transcribted into sounds, is a piece of classical music!!! The sound transcribed from a dolphin, on the other hand, sounds to me like a Chinese sentimental piece. And HEAR THIS...the sound transcribed from a human being is a grand symphony!!! But the sound transcribed from an AIDS patient sounds really melancholic....

Reflection on a Quote from 'Breaking Barriers' by Danny Cox

"Your life is like a book. The title page is your name, the preface your introduction to the world. The pages are a daily record of your efforts, trials, pleasures, discouragement, and achievements. Day by day your thoughts and acts are being inscribed in your book of life. Hour by hour, the record is being made that must stand for all time. Once the word 'finis' must be written, let it then be said of your book that it is a record of noble purpose, generous service, and work well-done."
- Grenville Kleiser, author of Training for Power and Leadership

My Beloved Country's Birthday!

Yesterday (9th Aug) marked the 44th birthday of my beloved country, Singapore. 8.22pm was a historic moment in this tiny land, because we as a nation said our synchronised pledge. I am proud to be part of that special moment. :)

Below is a little poem I have penned:-

My beloved Singapore,

though tiny you may be,

but grand are your dreams.

I am so proud of you,

of what you have achieved,

though tiny you may be.
