I had a sudden thought this morning. Happy memories will have a positive effect on the health of the cells in our bodies, thereby influencing our overall health. Conversely, unhappy memories will cause our cells to suffer, thereby adversely affecting our health. If my hypothesis is correct, then it is important for us to make a conscious effort to create happy memories by focusing on happy moments.

However, I guess I have to learn to enjoy them, given the fact that there are so many XXX tracking my every movement, et cetera. (They have even gone to the extent of trying to involve my family!) They are really getting on my nerves and seriously speaking, I feel harassed! When someone means a lot to you, you will consciously or subconsciously be interested in anything that reminds you of him or her. So, for instance, if that person is an Indian, you will be interested in places like India and Little India (in Singapore). You will also be interested in any Hindu festivals and anything else that is 'Indian'. You do not need to study psychology to know these things. You just need to be aware of your own feelings. 难道你一点自觉都没有吗? 不要再自欺欺人了,好吗?

It's sad when your own siblings take advantage of you and your good nature. When you don't question their intentions but have instead chosen to trust them implicitly, and you end up being betrayed, how does that make you feel? It's certainly not a good feeling. But then when you think about it objectively, the person who ought to be ultimately blamed is actually the head of the household. In fact, all forms of dysfunction in a family are due to the failure(s) of the head. It's sad but it's true...

1. You could be the best employee in your department/company. But as long as your supervisor does not like you or feels that you are a threat to him/her (because of his/her own insecurities), you can expect that he/she would rather keep those who are incompetent or lousy than to keep you.

2. There is no guarantee that you will get to keep your job or get a promotion at work just because your boss likes you (in the romantic sense).

3. If your boss likes you (in the romantic sense) but if you do not reciprocate, you can expect that he/she may turn nasty or he/she may not want to keep you, even if you are the best employee.

4. It may not be a good thing to be liked by your supervisor/boss, if he/she is of the opposite gender or if he/she is a homosexual.

5. Being pretty/handsome or charming may not be a good thing, unless you are prepared to use your good looks or charm to your advantage and face the possibility of betraying your conscience in the process.

My Thoughts

I hope to start doing something for women (and girls), particularly women  (and girls) in neighbouring countries who are in vulnerable situations - women (and girls) who are targets of human trafficking rings. Besides children, women have a special place in my heart (not because I am a woman). Reading news of women (and girls) being sexually exploited or raped stirs up deep emotions of anger in me (not because I was ever in those situations) and I know I have to do something for them. The last time I did volunteering work was some years ago, when I volunteered to tutor a Chinese student from Taiwan. Now that my health is getting better, I think it's time for me to start volunteering again. But before I can do significant amount of volunteering work, I must first make sure that I am in tip-top condition physically.

Food for Thought

Introverts aren't unsocial - they are just social in a different way. Introverts need fewer relationships, but they like more connection and intimacy. Since it takes a great deal of our energy to engage with other people, we are reluctant to need to spend too much energy on socializing. That's why we don't enjoy idle chitchat.
~ Marti Olsen Laney (Author of The Introvert Advantage)

YES! I'm definitely NOT antisocial, although that seems to be the general impression people have of me.

Food for Thought

Rather than bring self-centred, introverts are often really the opposite. Our ability to focus on our internal world and reflect on what we are feeling and experiencing allows us to understand the external world and other human beings better. What appears to be self-centredness is actually the very talent that provides the capacity to understand what it's like to put ourselves in someone else's shoes.

Counter to our stereotypes of introverts, they are not necessarily quiet or withdrawn, but their focus is inside their own heads. They need a quiet, reflective place where they can think things through and recharge themselves.

Some charities such as the one I'm working at seem to like to employ people with 'questionable integrity', who'll resort to underhand and unscrupulous means, without thinking twice, just to get rid of someone who's upright and above board. Ironically, some of these people seem to think that despite their evil inclinations, they'll still be protected by their gods or by something else. And even more ironically, some of them still think they'll go to heaven when they exit from this world. Do they really think they can escape retribution (or bad karma) or judgement despite all the despicable things they've done and their evil inclinations???!!!

In a multi-racial country like Singapore, we have to exercise cultural and religious sensitivity. We cannot afford to be insensitive! And Chinese especially cannot afford to be insensitive, because we are the majority in Singapore and Muslims (Malays) are the minority. Otherwise, we may disintegrate as a society.

Some of my Western friends who have never lived here for any period of time have sometimes self-righteously proclaimed, no doubt after reading the cliches in the media, that they could never live under the "stifling and draconian" laws that we have.

My answer to them is simple: Are you the sort to urinate in public when a toilet isn't available, the sort to vandalise public property, the sort that would leave a mess in a public toilet that you share with others?

In short, are you a civilised person who wants to live in a civilised society? Because the things you cannot do in Singapore are precisely the sort that civilised people should not do anyway. If you are, you have nothing to fear.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew

Dr Lee Wei Ling wrote:

"The health of men often deteriorates after they lose their wives. The security officers and I watched Papa getting more frail every day. His facial features were grim, perhaps to mask his sadness and grief. I took one day at a time and persuaded him not to undertake any arduous trips to America or Europe. China and Japan were near enough and manageable. I was pleased to get him out of the house.

By July this year, Papa’s health had stabilised and even begun to improve gradually. I reminded myself of the analogy I used for him – titanium. Titanium is light but strong. It can bend a little, but it will not snap unless it is under overwhelming force.

Physically, we all eventually succumb. Papa is also mortal. But he is psychologically stronger than most people. Life has to carry on, and he will keep going so long as he can contribute to Singapore.

As I was halfway through writing this article, I went out of my room for a drink of water and saw a note from Papa addressed to all three of his children. It read:

“For reasons of sentiment, I would like part of my ashes to be mixed up with Mama’s, and both her ashes and mine put side by side in the columbarium. We were joined in life and I would like our ashes to be joined after this life.”

An inspiring and moving testimony of not only a great leader but also a great husband...
