Money that has been given to the organisation I work at for the purpose of pay adjustment for social workers has never been used for the said purpose. There are so many malpractices at my workplace. Sigh... Obviously, the management has not learnt its lesson from the previous saga. I think it's time for NCSS to step in again...

Colleagues who don't deserve to get promoted get promoted anyway. Colleagues who aren't suitable to be HODs get to be HODs (because of their connections) anyway. Colleagues who don't deserve unusual increments get them anyway. All my social work colleagues (including the HOD and Deputy HOD) who aren't suitable to be social work professionals get recruited and get to stay on anyway. The very few good ones (including me) get trampled upon and/or are treated like trash!! (天理何在?)And all of these things are happening because of my ED! I'm sure he won't do the same things he has been doing at my workplace with his own company!! Why? Because if he does, he'll be making very huge losses and gaining a bad reputation for his company!

My Thoughts

In order for a person to work in a charity (regardless of the position), I believe that the top prerequisite is to have a good heart. Sadly and ironically, a lot of people at my workplace have hearts that are inclined towards evil (or are full of evil).

My Thoughts

Recently, my immediate boss told me that my ex-supervisor had sent her an email pertaining a common client. I am SURE she knew that it was my client but yet instead of emailing me directly, she had chosen to go through my immediate boss. It showed her lack of professionalism and her inability to avoid bringing her personal prejudice to bear on our 'working relationship'. (I am using inverted commas here because there was no working relationship between us even though there should be in view of the fact that we had a common client.) Incidentally, she was the one who had sinned against me MANY times, not the other way round. So all the more she shouldn't allow her personal prejudice to interfere with our 'working relationship'. She should leave the social work field for good, instead of being a black sheep and a disgrace to the social work profession. I could have gone to her immediate boss regarding this matter but I didn't. Why would I want to stoop to her level?!

Social Work

I just read an article in the Straits Times (dated 6 Jul 2013), entitled The Price of Not Raising Social Workers' Pay. I like what the writer (Ms Ang Bee Lian) has written. Incidentally, the writer is the Chief Executive of the National Council of Social Service.

In the article, Ms Ang wrote about the 'personal risk many social workers undertake when they work in difficult situations where they intervene to protect vulnerable people...' This brought to my mind an incident that happened years ago when I visited a totally blind elderly client, who lived with a mentally ill son. During the visit, her son suddenly came out of the kitchen with a knife and aimed it at me. Fortunately, nothing happened. Another personal risk that social workers may face is the possibility of being raped. (I have heard about social workers being raped in Hong Kong.)

Besides personal risk, social workers may also face sexual harassment. Personally, I have experienced that on many occasions. :( It can be a mental torture. :(

I'd like to quote part of the last paragraph in the article:-

The question should not be whether we can afford to pay social workers a competitive wage, but whether we can afford not to, and leave social issues and social injustice to fester...

Fuming

A new colleague is really getting on my nerves. Her sheer arrogance and apparent superiority complex really put me off! She is so new to this field but yet is so unwilling to learn. (Why ask for my views if she is so unreceptive? She ought to learn the hard way!) I am not obligated to teach her what I know and so she ought to be thankful that I am willing to share with her what I know. I could have sabotaged her by deliberately giving her wrong information, etc, etc. But I didn't and I won't (because my conscience is still intact) and so she ought to be thankful that she has met me and not someone who is evil and who intends to do her in! She's just TOTALLY unfit to be working in this field. (She should go back to her old field and be a blessing, rather than staying put where she is a misfit and be a curse.) Damn it!

我认为那些在事业中途转换跑道成为社工的人很会玩办公室政治。。。这些人让我觉得好可怕。。。

Workplace Bullies

If the writer I mentioned in the earlier post were to work in a non-profit organisation, he would probably be very disheartened because the bullying he might encounter in such an organisation could be many times worse than what he had experienced at his recent workplace. So, if you are aspiring to become social workers or if you are hoping to work in a non-profit organisation, please do not have the expectation that you will be working alongside angelic social workers or colleagues (non-social work colleagues).

Social Work

It's a grave mistake for the government to blindly encourage people to enter the social work profession, because people without a true desire to serve will likely enter. What will then happen to those who are at the receiving end of the services? Are they likely to be helped? I wonder if the government has thought of the long-term repercussions?

Breaking Night by Liz Murray
